The 2005 Continuum (a 1,000-case blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) has changed very little from last year. The Cabernet Franc component is beginning to reveal more earthy, floral notes, but overall this remains a dense purple-colored 2005 with a big, sweet nose of black currants, subtle burning embers, and wood smoke. It is a full-bodied effort with terrific purity, and plenty of substance allied with elegance. Both vintages will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and both should age beautifully for 25-30+ years. Tim Mondavi’s new project continues to display exceptional promise.
