The 1989 exhibits a moderately intense, stylish bouquet of new saddle leather, spicy, smoky, vanillin, toasty oak, and deep, rich, cherry fruit. The wine displays exceptional purity, full body, excellent delineation, and a moderately long finish. It is a graceful yet authoritatively-flavored Barbaresco for drinking over the next 10-15 years.
Bruno Rocca is an up and coming producer fashioning small quantities of wine from one of Barbaresco's great vineyards. Made in a modern style, 50% of the wine is aged in small French oak barrels, of which one-third is new. Although I have a slight preference for the 1989, with 4-5 years of aging these sentiments may change.
