Produced from 50-60-year old vines, the 2003 Cotes du Rhone (50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 30% Carignan) reveals more dry tannin than its siblings along with big, sweet and sour cherry notes intermixed with hints of strawberries, leather, meat, and earth. Drink this muscular Cotes du Rhone over the next 3-4 years.
By the way, visits to this estate are well worth the trip if only to purchase wine, and visitors should be sure to ask to taste the rarest wine made by Janasse, a late harvest sweet cuvee of botrytised Clairette and Roussanne called Les Raisins Perdu. It is an impeccably well-made, intriguing offering, but there is very little produced, and it is only sold at the winery.
