The 2001 Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr is reduced and will require substantial air if served over the next 6 years. On the palate, however, it conquers the taster with a magnificent array of sea salt, minerals, juicy cherries, tangy red currants, almonds, and ripe pears. Armed with outstanding depth and richness, this elegantly-strewn wine also exhibits an exceedingly long and pure finish. Projected maturity: 2010-2024.
On a side note, subscribers who, like me, purchased Kerpen's 1990s are advised to drink them sooner rather than later. Even the Ausleses have hit their stride and will soon be past their peak of maturity.
