The 2011 Rosso di Montalcino is a simple and straightforward Sangiovese (aged in botte grande) that makes for the perfect gateway wine for those not ready to commit to the more sophisticated Brunello. Having said that, this wine is very "Brunelloish" in aromas with delicate tones of pressed violets, cola, dried cherry, Spanish cedar and tangy eucalyptus or balsam herb. In the mouth, it presents fresh acidity and a medium build. The character of the wine is clean and frank. Drink: 2014-2017.
Elisabetta Gnudi is an important force in Tuscan wine. The owner of Borgo Scopeto in Chianti Classico, she purchased Caparzo in 1999, soon followed by the acquisition of the adjacent property, the venerable Altesino, in 2003. I have always been a fan of her range of products and the honest pricing associated with them. This set of new release offers a good number of excellent value buys.
