A newly-Christened dry estate Riesling, the 2004 Riesling “Quant” refers to an expression in local dialect signifying one’s complete satisfaction. By that standard, “Quant” is certainly quant. The origins are in sand, gravel, and slate sites. A lovely, Ruwer-like aroma of red berries and gooseberry leads to a glossy palate exhibiting a palpable sense of density, yet is smooth, clear and refined in its expression of berries, citrus, mineral salts, and nut oils, finishing with lip-smacking juiciness and salinity. This wine is one gram over the legal limit for “trocken”, and in any case, Loewen is one of those growers wisely trying to wean his countrymen off of an insistence that wine fit that particular legal pigeon hole.
