The 2009 Amarone della Valpolicella is an outstanding achievement that ushers forth an incredible array of aromas, from dried cherry and spice to chocolate and crushed black pepper. This is the proverbial “big boy” Amarone (the alcohol clocks in at a whopping 16.5%) that magically carries its substantial weight with the grace of a classical dancer. The finish is packed tight with blackberry and dark spice, and the residual sugar is noticeably high. Soft, opulent, lush and velvety describe the mouthfeel. This wine is not for everyone – especially at this young stage. It will, however, gain complexity in time. Drink 2015-2028.
Of the “modernist” school in Valpolicella, Roccolo Grassi delivers some of the most distinctive red, white and dessert wines in northern Italy.
