The 1994 Firebreak exhibits Sangiovese's tell-tale new saddle leather, sour cherry, spicy, richly fruity nose. Spicy, cedar, tobacco-like flavors cascade across the palate with enough acidity for freshness, but no real tannic clout. Soft, loaded with fruit, and richly fruity, this wine should drink well for 5-6 years. I wish all California Sangioveses were this tasty.
With all the disappointing Sangiovese emanating from California, it is encouraging to see wines such as Shafer's Firebreak. Unfortunately, only 1,200-1,400 cases are made of this wine, which tends to be made from a blend of 86%-88% Sangiovese and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon.
Another of Napa's finest wineries, Shafer has taken full advantage of a succession of superlative vintages during the nineties, producing a powerful portfolio of brilliant wines. Since 1991, just about everything emerging from Shafer Vineyards has been high on buyers' lists. All things considered, Doug and John Shafer are at the top of their game.
