Yet another gorgeous expression, the 2009 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega takes a traditional approach, with 60% of the oak aging in botte grande and 40% in barrique. The elegance of the fruit comes though, as does the chewy intensity of the appassimento. Dark cola, mesquite, leather, resin, road asphalt, prune, raisin and cigar box fall seamlessly in line. The mouthfeel is richly textured and bold. Drink 2016-2028.
Franco Scamperle’s Amarone Pergole Vece is one of the best Valpolicella wines on the market today. Only made in the best vintages from old vines, it sees a longer appassimento and oak regime to increase the wine’s distinctive intensity. Pergole Vece ranks high on my list of personal favorites, but unfortunately I have seen the wine’s retail price creep up suddenly the past few years.
