This is the first cuvee of Chardonnay from the 1990 vintage to be released by Kalin Cellars. It is also the richest Chardonnay I have yet tasted from Kalin - and that is saying something! Other 1990 cuvees will be released later, no doubt because of Terry Leighton, the idiosyncratic, anti-commercial proprietor of this top-notch specialist in handcrafted, distinctive wines. The 1990 Cuvee CH Chardonnay possesses massive flavor extraction, wonderful underlying crisp acidity, a tight, unforthcoming nose that, with airing, gives up floral, mineral scents combined with ripe fruit. There is explosive richness in the mouth, and the finish must last for nearly a minute. This is an unevolved, young but impressive Chardonnay, which, given Kalin Cellars' track record, should age effortlessly for at least a decade.
