Charlopin's 2006 Marsannay En Montchenevoy displays a prominent and pungent nose of ripe dark cherry, bacon fat, and wood smoke. Bright and invigorating on the palate, it could scarcely make a greater contrast with the corresponding Echezeaux, a wine from more clay-rich and less chalky soil. The tannins here are quire refined and the finish intriguingly suggestive of chalk, iron filings, and medicinal herbal concentrate as well as generously brimming with dark berry fruit. This should be worth following for at least the next 3-4 years. Philippe Charlopin is known for his outgoing personality, which applies also to the wines of his domaine spread over more than two dozen appellations, an astonishing nine of which are grand crus. Elevage is long here, and when I last tasted his 2006s with Charlopin in Spring 2008, none had yet been bottled.Various importers, including The Country Vintner, Ashland, VA 23005; tel.
