Super-ripe black cherries are found in the boisterous nose of the 2003 Clos de la Roche (from 60-year-old vines). Roasted oak, blackberries, cassis, and dark cherries dominate this jammy, tarry effort’s powerful personality. It is medium-bodied, complex, pure, intensely flavored, and displays a long, harmonious finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.
Note: The information on acidification reported in the article on Maison Lucien Le Moine’s Cote de Beaunes was incorrect, according to director/winemaker Mounir Saouma. This negociant firm did not acidify any of its acquired wines, stresses Saouma, the figures quoted in my earlier article were his assessments of “typical” 2003s.
