The Il Picchio Vineyard is in a cool spot surrounded by thick forests with east and southeast exposures. The vines were very young when Castello di Querceto made the 1990 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Picchio, but this vintage had farmers all across Tuscany very excited. Good rain, moderate temperatures and steep diurnal shifts made this an iconic growing season. Modern fermenters were not used and pump-overs were all done by hand. This wine offers pretty fruit richness, although the quality of the fruit is faded today. There is some lingering sweetness with aromas of leather, cured meat and tobacco.
