The 2005 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is the most obvious of these new releases. Here the French oak is felt in the wine’s volume, tannin and sweetness. There is just enough intensity in the fruit to counter the oak, but just barely. Dark red cherries, French oak, sweet spices and new leather linger on the finish in this powerful youthful Riserva. The quality and sheer pedigree of the fruit is so beautiful, one can only wonder what this bottling might taste like with less makeup. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025.
