Last Tasted 8/92
Every time I tasted this wine between 1987 and 1990 I bestowed it a perfect score. However, at several recent tastings the wine has begun to display less than an other-worldly character. At its best, it was one of the most viscous, oily white burgundies I have ever tasted. The only wine that vaguely resembled it was the 1980 Chalone Chardonnay - amazing as that may sound. While it is still concentrated, broad-shouldered, and powerful, its freshness is not as apparent, and its high alcohol is noticeable in the finish. At its appallingly high price of $500-$700 a bottle, the thought of purchasing a wine beginning its decline is frightening.
