I first became aware of the little-known Daniel Bouland’s wines last year and the cuvee of 2006 Morgon Vieilles Vignes selected by his importer (and which reflects several individual local terroirs) has redeemed the tremendous promise it showed in tank, indeed seemingly equaling the quality of the superb 2005. Ripe cassis and blackberry are allied to raw meatiness, pungent herbs, wood smoke, and sea breezes in the nose. For all of the vividly juicy black fruits that make this wine thirst-quenching as well as profound, you’ll swear at the same time that some part of it you can’t spit or swallow has become encrusted on your palate! As it takes on air, this true cru Beaujolais takes you to deeper, darker, stonier places, its intensity undiminished. Plan on following a few bottles for at least five years, as you will be rewarded with an experience you would be very disappointed to have missed.Importer: Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, PA; tel.
