Another screaming value, the 2009 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo punches well above its weight. Rich, deep and expansive, the 2009 bursts from the glass with deep layers of fruit, all in a medium-bodied style that is hugely appealing, especially considering its very friendly price point. Plums, blackberries and grilled herbs linger on the finish in a wine that shows the darker, more brooding side of Montepulciano. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016. La Valentina is a great source for flavorful reds that emphasize the richness Montepulciano is capable of. The whites are newer to me, but they are equally delicious, and great values too.
