From a parcel adjacent to Lalou Bize-Leroy's near the top of the Corton hillside (over-looking Ladoix), Prieur's Corton Charlemagne reveals highly-expressive aromatics of jammy ripe fruits, vanilla and toasty oak. Its extraordinary ripeness is again found in its powerful, superbly extracted and gorgeously balanced, red berry, floral and peach-packed flavor profile. This massive yet elegant wine has the necessary structure for years of cellaring, but I believe it will be delicious young. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2010. As my scores and tasting notes indicate, I was tremendously impressed with the quality of Prieur's wines. What had been an average-to-good estate has rapidly become one of Burgundy's finest domaines. A final note: I was given the opportunity to taste this estate's 1996s, both in white and red, and was blown away by their quality. More on them in a future report.
