The 2004 Binger Scharlachberg Riesling Spatlese represents the first time Rumpf has essayed an off-dry wine from this site, and the results suggest that he should repeat the experiment. It also struck a cord with his importer, since the entire 600 liter (“Halbstuck”) cask is coming to the States. Candied pineapple and smoky pungency in the nose lead to a creamy palate with rich peach and pineapple, brown spices, and persistent smoke. The satisfyingly long finish is luscious, spicy and smoky.
