The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is an outstanding blend of close to equal parts Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc that’s aged mostly in concrete tank, with 20% in older barrels. A classic Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc, it offers up clean, beautifully defined notes of white peach, apple, brioche and lively minerality to go with a medium-bodied, balanced and lively palate feel. It can be enjoyed anytime over the coming decade.
Owners Frederic and Daniel Coulon made solid wines (particularly their whites) in 2004. Looking at the reds, their top cuvee (Boisrenard) still shows hints of its oak elevage (which I don’t think will ever completely disappear), yet stays pure, balanced and very drinkable. Both it and the traditional cuvee are medium-bodied, elegant efforts to drink over the coming couple of years.
