The dark ruby-colored, earthy, spicy 2007 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard displays a broodingly backward personality as well as very good depth. The tannins and acidity suggest a year or so of bottle age will be beneficial. This beauty can be consumed over the following 7-8 years. Given proprietor Ehren Jordan's experience working in France, it is not surprising that his wines possess French-like acid profiles as well as an unmistakable minerality. Jordan continues to fashion some brilliant white wines, including purchased fruit from John Alban's vineyard in Edna Valley. You’ll need to give this young pup some years in the cellar, because as constructed, it’s tough and hard. The acids and tannins stand out, while the fruit and oak have not been integrated. But it’s an enormously rich, complicated Pinot Noir, offering tiers of cherries, currants, cola, pomegranates, licorice, orange peel and sweet smoky oak, and the texture is pure silk.
