The two offerings from Calatayud include the 2008 Pieza el Coli, a blend of 50% Aragon, 30% Carinena, and 20% Provechon (Aragon and Provechon are indigenous clones of Garnacha). The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and the wine fermented with native yeasts. Aging occurred in French and Hungarian oak before bottling without filtration. There is nothing complicated about this deep purple, juicy wine. Aromas of cedar, mineral, and black cherry are followed by a mouth-filling, rich, layered, spicy, pleasure-bent red that finishes with no hard edges. It is meant for drinking now and over the next 6-8 years. Majuelos de Espana, headed by Felipe Alvarez, is a negociant group whose grape growers and winemakers are devoted to recovering old Majuelos (Vineyards) across Spain. Majuelos de Espana’s offerings from Ribera del Duero are all barrel samples of 100% Tinta Fine (Tempranillo) from the great 2009 vintage.Importer: Felipe Alvarez, Majuelos de Espana, www.majuelos.com
