It is ironic that Zaca Mesa, which produced some of Santa Barbara's finest winemakers (Ken Brown of Byron, Jim Clendenen and Adam Tolmach of Au Bon Climat, and Bob Lindquist of Qupe), has had such an irregular quality record. As the following tasting notes demonstrate, there is not much about which to get excited. However, there is good news. The highly talented Daniel Gehrs, who has fashioned some marvelous white wines under his own label, has been hired as the full-time winemaker at Zaca Mesa. If he is given the independence he deserves, I predict the quality of Zaca Mesa's wines will soar. Gehrs' first true vintage will be 1993, as he arrived following the 1992 harvest.
Similar t0 the Mourvedre, but slightly fruity, the 1991 Syrah is a light example of this varietal, with little depth or personality.
Although most of these wines are indifferent examples, look for things to dramatically improve under Daniel Gehrs. Tel. (805) 688-3310
