The 2001 Rosso di Sera was one of the first wines from Chianti Classico to blend Colorino with Sangiovese, and it is still one of the best. A dark ruby/garnet in color, its powerful, ripe aromas of red currants and plums and its ample notes of cinnamon, cloves, and cedar, are followed by deep and solid flavors, concentrated but broad and round. The sweet, long flow is balanced and elegant despite its undeniable force on the palate. Drink: 2005-2015.
One of my favorite small estates in Chianti Classico, Poggiopiano continues to offer wines of notable size and structure for an area – San Casciano Val di Pesa – once thought of as strictly a source for quaffing wine. But where there’s a will there’s a way, and the Bartoli brothers, assisted by Luca D’Attoma, don’t mind upsetting certain superficial preconceptions.
