The 2012 Cartoixa is a blend of Garnacha with 25% Cari?ena from 12 different vineyards. In general, the Garnacha is from higher altitude vineyards on clay and limestone soils, and the Cari?ena is from lower altitude ones where the soils are basically decomposed slate. As in their other wines, the Garnacha was fermented with full clusters in cement vats while the Cari?ena was destemmed and fermented in stainless steel. The wine matured in a combination of 225-, 500- and 1,400-liter oak barrels for almost two years. The wine showed unusually oaky for the current house style, with loads of sweet spices and a hint of smoke over a core of ripe black and red fruit. The palate reveals some dusty tannins, moderate acidity and a slightly bitter finish. This is the more commercial red from what I tasted, the one where the oak is more evident. 5,796 bottles were filled in July 2014.
