Kerpen's 1991 Bernkasteler Bratenhofchen Riesling Spatlese is a medium-bodied, soft, almost diffuse style of Riesling that some readers may find unattractive. Although not up to the quality of Kerpen's 1989s and 1990s, I enjoyed the copious quantities of fruit, the purity, and the unreleased CO2 that gives the wine a spritzy quality. Those familiar with Kerpen's classic style of Riesling will be surprised by the somewhat unstructured nature of this offering. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. A Terry Theise Selection, imported by Milton S. Kronheim, Co., Washington, DC.
