There are two cuvees of Cornas produced by Tardieu-Laurent. The Cornas Coteaux is made from hillside vineyards that average 20 years in age. Most of the grapes emerge from a vineyard called Les Chaillots. The 1995 Cornas Cuvee Coteaux (only 75 cases) achieved 13% alcohol naturally. Aged in 100% new oak, the wine has soaked up the influence of new wood. It is a powerful, rich wine with a dense purple color, and an exceptionally intense nose of earthy black fruits, minerals, smoke, and grilled meats. It is a great Cornas that is showing even better out of bottle than it did from cask. The wine's layers of richness, sweet tannin, and awesome mouthfeel suggest it will be at its best between 2000-2020. As a postscript, readers should be aware that all the Tardieu-Laurent wines reviewed in this segment are very reasonably priced.A Patrick Lesec Selection (Paris fax # 011 33 1 42843822), various American importers
