For thoughts on Chateau Ste Michelle’s uniqueness and recent evolution, consult my extensive April, 2013 text designed to introduce recent tasting notes. The Ste. Michelle 2009 Merlot Canoe Ridge Estate – from a complex blend similar to that of its 2010 counterpart – performs in a remarkably similar manner to that successor, albeit with a bit more glyceral richness and an extra measure of savor by way of salinity. There are smoky black tea, iris, sassafras, and fennel overtones with an abundance of juicy, pit-tinged dark cherry fruit and a mouthwatering finish of focus, vivacity and grip, albeit with slight alcoholic warmth. Enjoy this outstanding value and truly elegant wine over the next 4-6 years. (Given 7,000 case-production, there should be some near you.)
