The 2012 Meursault 1er Cru Blagny has a tightly wound walnut and gravel-scented nose that demands more coaxing than the village cru. The palate is fresh on the entry with sour lemon and green apple. There is nice weight here, very expressive of its terroir with a crisp, quite punchy finish. Fine.
Thierry and Pascal have been running this domaine since they took over the running of what was known as Domaine Joseph Matrot in 2000. They farm just under 20 hectares of vine, including a choice selection of premier crus in the Cote de Beaune. Though I did not have the opportunity to taste a full selection of their latest release, I was suitably impressive by the four wines that were presented in London.
