The outstanding 2011 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Trois Cepages, from a biodynamically farmed vineyard, is fashioned from equal parts Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, and is bottled unfiltered with no exposure to oak whatsoever. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by abundant aromas of blueberry, black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with a notion of lavender. Medium to full-bodied with loads of fruit as well as soft tannins, it possesses the charm and fruit-forwardness that makes the finest 2011s appealing. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
Along with Peter Weygandt, I coincidentally discovered this fine estate with the release of their 1999s. Proprietor Daniel Boulle has done brilliant work over the last decade plus, and now works with the talented Philippe Cambie as his oenologist. The wines continue to go from strength to strength, including these less expensive offerings. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with Domaine Les Aphillanthes, it’s time to do so.
