The new estate that Michel Chapoutier co-owns in Coteaux d'Aix en Provence produces three levels of wine. The most commercial level is Les Matines, the richer second level is Beates, and the third level is the luxury cuvee from old vines called Terra d'Or, a wine with Domaine Trevallon-like richness and complexity. The 1995 Beates (not vinified by Chapoutier) is a straightforward, medium-bodied wine with good fruit, but a rustic personality and coarse tannin. As Chapoutier admits, the raw materials for the 1995 were superior to those in 1996, but since he controlled the vinification in 1996, a better wine was produced.
