This traditionally run Bodegas estate bottles all of its wines. Readers should keep an eye out for the upcoming release of the 1994 Rioja Reserva. The first of a trilogy of exceptional vintages for Rioja, the wine exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, followed by aromas of sweet black cherry and berry fruit intermixed with vanillin and spice. Medium-bodied and rich, with gobs of glycerin, a fleshy, fat texture, outstanding purity, and a long, lush finish, this Rioja is already displaying complexity, accessibility, and suppleness, yet it can be cellared for a decade or more. Murrieta's Reservas and Reserva Specials are essentially all the same blends that spend differing amounts of time in wood. The Reservas tend to spend 2 1/2 years in 15-year old American oak barrels, and the Reserva Speciales 3 1/2 years in old American wood, followed by an additional 3 years of bottle age.
