First planted in 1994, most of the Clayvin vineyard was replanted due to phylloxera (the original Cabernet and Merlot didn't get replanted). It's now a Chardonnay, Pinot and Syrah vineyard. It sits on dense soils on a north-facing slope, close-planted (for Marlborough) and generally cropping at around 1kg per vine. Vintage 2016 was a fruitful year with good berry sizes. This means that it hasn't quite attained its normally rich density. It's a slightly high-toned style with floral notes and tangy black currants. Starting to develop now, it is taking on some savory tones and that fruit is softening. Mellow tannins provide a gentle clutch on the cheeks. Drink now to 2025; it doesn't have the depth to go further in this particular vintage.
