The 713-case cuvee of 1999 Syrah Lytton Estate is a blend of 92% Syrah, 7% Grenache, and 1% Viognier that tips the scales at a lofty, although well-hidden 14.8% alcohol. Pure, rich, deep, concentrated, and seamless, this medium to full-bodied, classic Syrah possesses floral and cassis aromas mixed with a hint of licorice. Intense, dark, described variously as a "brooding monster" and a "black beauty," this is full-blown Syrah from one of California’s most respected wineries. Black currant, leather, espresso and chocolate evidence the deep fruit and lavish oak. ATP (Advance Tasting Program) was jokingly referred to as "assault the palate" by one taster.
