From the Verduno township, the 2009 Barolo Monvigliero is totally dark and inky black in appearance. It shows a feisty, pugilistic side with muscular power and rock-solid tannins. The nose is slightly muddled by savory notes of worn leather and smoked jerky that take away from the brightness of the Nebbiolo grape. Dark prunes and dried cherries appear on the close. Of the various Barolos in this flight, the Monvigliero has suffered most from the 2009 heat. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2018.
The Scavino family (Enrico and his daughters Enrica and Elisa) carry forth an important family legacy with a wide range of cru-specific wines that brilliantly exhibit individual styles – despite all being made by the same hands.
