Only 100 cases of the marvelous 1990 unfiltered Chardonnays were produced. The 1990 Chardonnay-Lorenzo Vineyard has a remarkable resemblance to a great white burgundy from Ramonet. The nose is subtle, although intense in its own delicate way. Aromas of oranges, toast, buttery apples, and even popcorn waft from the glass. In the mouth, there is stunning concentration, an unctuous richness, crisp acidity to provide grip and focus, as well as a phenomenally long, intense finish. Impressive!Along with Au Bon Climat, Calera, Kistler, Newton, Sanford, Robert Talbott, and Williams-Selyem, Marcassin is producing California's most riveting Chardonnays. The jury is still out on the question of their aging potential, but the matter is academic given how extraordinarily complex, rich, and well-balanced the Marcassin Chardonnays can be.
