Matrot's 1959 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots is a ripe, rich wine that bears the stamp of a sunny site in a sunny vintage. Offering up aromas of red berry compote and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, sweet and fleshy, with a generous core of fruit, ripe but chalky tannins and a somewhat heady finish. This is some way from any kind of decline, but nor is it especially complex.
