Bodegas Matarredonda, whose first vintage was 2001, is off to a quick start. As is typical in the D.O. of Toro, these wines are 100% Tinta de Toro, the local clone of Tempranillo. The 2003 Juan Rojo was aged for 8 months in French and American oak. Purple-colored, it has a slightly baked character in the nose, a characteristic of this hot vintage. On the palate, this meaty, beefy wine is surprisingly supple-textured and nearly elegant. There is plentiful ripe fruit, good integration of wood, tannin, and acidity, and enough structure for 2-4 years of further evolution. This Toro offers very good value.
