The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Monte Olmi is made in a richer, more opulent style with more residual sugar than the regular bottling. This big, expansive Amarone offers up plenty of dark fruit, licorice, leather and spices in a generous style. The tannins finish with slight notes of astringency and bitterness that detract from the wine’s overall balance, which is a shame as the underling material is very high quality. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017. Tedeschi seems to struggle achieving a consistent level of quality across all of their offerings. I found the simpler wines better balanced than the more important bottles. This may very well be a case of trying too hard, as the estate is clearly capable of making beautiful wines.Importer: Dreyfus Ashby & Co., New York, NY; tel. (212) 818-0770
