The 2009 Corimbo I borders on black in color with a loaded, plush presence on the palate. It conceals plenty of tannin and is likely to require 6-8 years of cellaring upon release. These are impressive debut wines from a great vintage. (Not yet released)Bodegas Roda is one of the quality leaders in Rioja. They have embarked on a couple of new projects, the first being the production of an entry-level Rioja named Sela. The second new Roda project is the development of two wines from Ribera del Duero made from 100% Tempranillo. The Corimbo I is a vineyard selection that is fermented in oak vats with malolactic in barrel and raised in a prudent 20% new oak. The 2009 Corimbo I has a similar aromatic profile to the Corimbo, but there is more delineation and tautness, more lift and vibrancy. On the palate, the tannins are a little rounder on the entry. It seems a little oaky at the moment but that should integrate with time. There is certainly good build in the mouth that leads to a masculine finish with layers of blackberry and broody, almost earthy dark fruit with a tangible savory character.
