This winery, named after its proprietor/winemaker Neil Pikes, is located sixty miles north of Adelaide in Clare Valley. The winery is well-known in Australia for its Riesling, but the reds are also successful, richly fruity wines. At first, the red wines taste like big, rich, ripe, fruit balls, without much complexity being displayed. However, 15-20 minutes in the glass reveals additional nuances and flavor dimensions. The dark ruby/purple-colored 1995 Shiraz displays a fragrant, intense, peppery, berry-scented nose, with eucalyptus aromas that develop after 10-15 minutes. The wine has a sweet, medium to full-bodied entry on the palate, good spice, admirable purity, and a soft, low acid, lush finish. This is a plump, succulently-textured Shiraz to drink over the next 7-8 years. I was told by the importer that there will be a Reserve offering from the 1994 vintage. In plain-speak, this wine is just out and out ... yummy! Importer: The Australian Premium Wine Collection, imported by Cabo Distributing, South El Monte, CA; tel. (818) 575-8090
