The 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico shows a touch more depth and delineation than the 2005 Amarone in its perfumed dark fruit. The finish is long, silky and pure, with floral notes that add a sense of lift on the close. The tannins are still a bit firm, but another year or two of bottle age should do the trick. This too, remains an essentially mid-weight Amarone best enjoyed relatively young. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.
I was quite taken with the Amarones I tasted from Tommasi this year. The wines spend three years in medium-size barrels and have a classic feel that is very attractive.
