The internationally styled as well as expensive 1996 La Montesa (30% Tempranillo, 40% Merlot, and 30% Graciano) is given a long maceration on its skins, and then aged for 8 months in new French oak followed by 5 months in American wood. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of caramel, cherry liqueur, plums, and licorice. Although monolithic, it is impressively endowed, rich, supple, and long. The obvious wood should become better integrated as the wine ages. Anticipated maturity: now-2010.
