Deep ruby. Wild aromas of blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, maple syrup, game, cedar and wintermint; initially rather high-pitched but showed a stronger '96-typical torrefaction aspect with aeration. Very deep and layered, but with none of the easy sweetness that characterizes so much Napa cabernet. A rather Old World style of cabernet, with slightly sauvage flavors of dark berries, leather and blood. Finishes subtle, spicy and very long, with substantial but rather suave tannins.
