Moving to the bottled releases, the 2011 Saint Joseph Reflet has an herbaceous slant, with notions of celery seed, white pepper, cedar and spice barely balanced by sweet raspberry fruit. Medium-bodied, pure and supple, it will be interesting to see how this herbal slant evolves. Nevertheless, there’s still plenty to like here and I’d lean towards drinking over the coming 4-5 years.
Made by Francois Villard, with varying degrees of whole cluster fermentation, these wines shows the racier, focused and peppery side to Syrah. Bright acids, notable tannin and pure, clean flavors are the norm here. Given the high level of stem usage, the vast majority of these will benefit from short term cellaring.
