The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's 1994 La Tache Grand Cru does not transcend the limitations of this challenging vintage, offering up a rather pedestrian bouquet of red-black fruit and licorice, becoming more and more dominated by its lavish application of high-quality new oak as it sits in the glass and never revealing any of the aromatic drama of which La Tache is capable. On the palate, the wine is chunky and foursquare, with bright acids and a certain tannic asperity that suggests this is unlikely to change in any critical respect in the foreseeable future.

A muscular, tough young wine that's difficult to evaluate now. It smells delicious with violet, rose petal, toasted bread, mocha and spice notes, but a wall of green, astringent and dry tannins makes for a rough and hard-as-nails finish that seems, frankly, unbalanced. This finish is crisp, ungenerous and somewhat short. Perhaps better after 2005. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,600 cases made.??–null??Region: France / Burgundy / La Tache Select to Add
