Performing impressively, the 1947 Smith Haut Lafitte is drinking much better than the 1949, exhibiting a rich bouquet of dark fruits mingled with burning embers, cigar wrapper and forest floor, followed by a medium to full-bodied, muscular and concentrated palate. Still impressively virile and structured, with plenty of depth at the core, it is in no danger of imminent decline and stands out as the finest older vintage of this estate, before it was resurrected by Florence and Daniel Cathiard, that I have tasted.
