The 2010 Vinyes Velles is 70% Carinena and 30% Garnacha from 70- to 90-year-old vineyards in the Porrera zone planted on llicorella soils. The wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, and has a purple-black color. The nose and palate are still extremely young, with superb purity of fruit still marked by the aromas that only the very best barrels in the world can give. It will need a little bit of time to get fully integrated into the wine, but the palate already shows very sophisticated, glossy tannins, and lively acidity. 23,000 bottles produced. It could be drunk now but I’d wait for some more complexity to develop once the puppy fat melts down with a little bit of time in bottle. Great wine and very good value. Drink 2015-2020.
Ferrer Bobet is the winery from multi-talented businessman Sergi Ferrer-Salat (if you visit Barcelona, don’t miss his winebar Monvinic) and Raul Bobet (ex-Torres and owner of Castell d’Encus in Costers del Segre). They produce two superb Carinena-based wines that are amazing in the balanced 2010 vintage, both highly recommended.
