An interesting blend of 52% Syrah, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Tempranillo and Petite Sirah, the 2011 Companion shows lots of Cabernet character, with blackcurrants, graphite and wild herbs all emerging from the glass. Full-bodied on the palate, with a deceiving suppleness, it has solid underlying structure and fine tannin, and shows an almost Bordeaux-like elegance with more time in the glass. It’s a serious bottle of wine and will have 10-15 years of longevity.
Carl Bowker continues to knock it out of the park with these Caliza releases. They’re unabashedly Paso in style, and not for the faint of heart, but they’re smoking wines and are a joy to drink.
