The 2001 Cantinino, which uses the estate’s best Sangiovese, offers a smoky and resinous red currant and plum nose, an ample texture with much firmness, and a solid, lengthy close. It will drink well for another decade. The Sonninos, a distinguished family which supplied Prime Ministers and Secretaries of State to Italy in the period prior to World War I, has long owned a sizeable property to the southwest of Tuscany. The wines were rather uneven in quality until recently, but the more active presence of the current owner, and the undeniable gifts of winemaker Stefano Chioccioli have given a new consistency to the production, and there is certainly little to criticize in this fine lineup of wines.Importer: Small Vineyards, Seattle WA; tel.
